Investing in Wellbeing at Work

At this time of year, many of us set new goals with a renewed sense of energy. We might promise ourselves we’ll get outside more, hit our step count, journal regularly, attend a workout, or reduce our screen time. All of these small actions are rooted in the same aim: improving our wellbeing, our happiness, and our sense of balance.

But if wellbeing matters so much in our personal lives, why do we often leave it at the door when it comes to work?

For most teachers, work takes up well over 70% of our time and mental energy. That makes it one of the most powerful places to either protect or drain our wellbeing. Supporting wellbeing at work isn’t about adding more to your to-do list or striving for perfection. It’s about making small, intentional adjustments that fit into the reality of school life.

Sometimes, the most effective changes are the simplest. You might choose to park slightly further away from school every Friday, building a five-minute walk into your morning routine as a gentle reset before the day begins. Or you could create a short playlist of five favourite songs for after school on a Wednesday, use that time for a focused fifteen-minute “power task” and then give yourself permission to leave work once the playlist ends. These moments don’t fix everything but they create breathing space and that matters.

If you’d like more structured support with this, our wellbeing-focused courses break these ideas down into manageable, realistic strategies designed specifically for teachers. They’re practical, evidence-informed and built to fit around the pressures and constraints of real classrooms.

Because investing in your wellbeing at work isn’t a luxury, its essential.

What is one small change you could add to your schedule next week to support your wellbeing? Have you tried something recently that’s made a positive difference for you or your colleagues? We’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.
